  • Mark Morris Nutcracker

    In a Nutshell

Soundcheck celebrates the imaginative incarnations of E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker: Choreographer Mark Morris and Brooklyn Philharmonic conductor Robert Cole discuss The Hard Nut, their disco-era retelling of the Tchaikovsky ballet, which closes this year’s BAM Next Wave Festival. Bandleader David Berger of the Sultans of Swing talks about Harlem Nutcracker, the jazz-based tale of a widowed grandmother who visits Club Sweets, her childhood vision of a nightclub. Plus, a look at the Shirim Orchestra’s The Golden Dreydl: A Klezmer Nutcracker, about an adventurous girl who causes trouble, saves a friend, and learns about life.
