Sketches of Spain, Cuba, and China
Through his groundbreaking mix of jazz, rock, classical, and traditional Cuban music, the Cuban-born clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera has established himself as a premier composer, as well. He discusses his new Brazilian-inspired album and interpreting the music of Benny Goodman. Spanish musicologist Antoni Piza, who specializes in the 20th-century music of Spain, and pianist Pedro Carbone visit for a live performance and conversation about last century’s Barcelona composers. Plus, music writer Ken Smith previews this week’s Soundcheck concert pick: Tan Dun’s Water Passion After St. Matthew at the BAM Next Wave Festival.
Proving that playing with one, two, even three ensembles is never enough for
one man, Paquito D’Rivera helped co-found the Cuban Orchestra of Modern
Music; serves as co-director of the group Irakere; and has recorded albums with
the chamber-music ensemble Triangulo, and with his eponymous big band and quintet.
