    Eclectic Electronica

Those haunting, unmistakable vocals in such David Lynch films as Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me belong to none other than chanteuse Julee Cruise. She’ll perform material from her new album, a collection of post-millennial lounge tunes entitled The Art of Being a Girl, and talk about portraying Andy Warhol in the Public Theater’s upcoming production about the life of New York art legend Keith Haring. Plus, music writer David Hurwitz reviews a recent electronica-inspired recording of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, featuring the Ensemble Modern conducted by Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös, and members of the Queen’s Chamber Trio bring a little 18th and 19th century music into the studio.

Self-described “Broadway belter” Julee Cruise Aside has performed with singer-conductor Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra, as well with Athens, Georgia’s other famous pop band, the B-52’s, occasionally filling in for former lead singer Cindy Wilson.

In addition to working with such organizations as the Radio Orchestras in Europe and the La Scala Milan opera house, Peter Eötvös serves as the head of the International Eötvös Institute and Foundation for young conductors and composers.

Like New York’s Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Germany’s first professional soloist ensemble has no chief conductor and programs performances, which have included Kurt Weill and Frank Zappa, in a democratic fashion. The members of Ensemble Modern also devote a significant amount of time and effort to uncovering and reinterpreting the works of young composers.

The inspiration for the Queen’s Chamber Band came, in part, from the band’s predecessor from the late 1700s, when John Christian Bach, youngest son of Johann Sebastian, was appointed Music Master to King George III and Queen Charlotte Sophia. More about the Queen’s Chamber Band.
