    Making Their Marks

This season marks the 50th anniversary of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and the legendary choreographer for whom the troupe is named will discuss how he and his dancers will be celebrating the milestone. Also, the Shanghai String Quartet will be in the studio for a live performance and a conversation about musical memorials, particularly the ways in which music commemorates tragedies, both political and personal.

The members of the Shanghai String Quartet have moved across the Hudson for a residency at Montclair State University, an institution less known for its music department than it is as the home of the Yogi Berra Museum. In our neck of the woods, they’ve most recently been playing the works of Wolf, Beethoven, and Chausson.

More about the Shanghai String Quartet

First known as a soloist in the legendary Martha Graham’s dance company, Merce Cunningham paved his career path by constructing solo and group pieces based on irregular phrase lengths and body rhythms, rather than musical beats.
