    The East-West Promise

After training in post-World War II Germany, Ukraine-born composer Virko Baley made his way out west (California and Nevada, to be precise) to continue his music schooling, and finally, to teach. On today’s program, Baley describes the influence of Ukrainian musical works on his recently completed first symphony. He also discusses the ways in which the personal tragedies and occasional triumphs in the lives of 16th and 17th century European composers have inspired his work, which includes a score for the first Ukrainian film ever to receive a prize at Cannes.

Though composer Virko Baley has spent his adult life crafting musical works in the U.S., critics and fans alike have admired his ability to retain a distinctly European character in many of his compositions.
