Give the Bassist Some
At most jazz concerts, you may notice a lonely figure standing toward the back of the stage: the double-bass player. Today's show brings the bassist front and center.

We examine the art of jazz- and classical-bass storytelling with musicians Jay Leonhart, who is currently performing in a one-man comedy-and-music show called The Bass Lesson, and Richard Hartshorne, whose recordings include Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites played on double bass. Plus, Bang On a Can All-Star bassist Robert Black talks about Tom Johnson’s quirky bass compositions. Black, who recently recorded an album of music for double, electric, midi, and upright basses, performed Johnson’s “Failing” at the 1992 BOAC Festival.
