Friday, February 20, 2009 - 08:18 AM
Music critic, educator, and food writer Fred Plotkin joins us on Soundcheck to explore "gluttony," as part of our series, "Seven Sins: The Deadly Medley." He shared with us a list of seven operas and a bit of Telemann's famous work of banquet music.
Rossini, "L’Italiana in Algeri"
Rossini's aria “Di Tanti Palpiti” from the opera Tancredi (known as the "Rice Aria")
Verdi, "Falstaff"
Humperdinck, "Hansel and Gretel"
Shostakovich’s "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"
Johann Strauss, Jr.’s "Die Fledermaus"
Puccini’s "Tosca"
BONUS: Georg Philipp Telemann, "Tafelmusik"
Fred Plotkin is the author of the books "Opera 101" and "Classical Music 101," and five books on Italian food and wine, including "Italy for the Gourmet Traveler." You can hear him give a lecture about "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to coincide with the return of these operas to the Metropolitan Opera in March and April.
