Critics Week: A List for Latin Music

Wednesday, December 17, 2008 - 05:28 PM

For her best-of-2008 list for Latin music, critic Carolina Gonzales of the New York Daily News took a thematic approach -- picking five artists from different corners of the genre.

Bioritmo, Biónico (Locutor Records).

El Guincho, Alegranza (Young Turks)

Miti Miti, Altar Espandex (Olora Records)

El Pirulo, Mas Salsa Que Tú (White Lion Records)

Yusa, Haiku (Tumi)

But wait! There's more! Other releases Carolina liked:

Julieta Venegas, MTV Unplugged (Sony International)

Ximena Sariñana, Mediocre (WEA International)

ZZK Sound Vol 1, Cumbia Digital (ZZK Records)

Monareta, Picotero (Nacional Records)

Buika, Niña de Fuego (WEA International)

Haiku is quite good and reminds me of Patricia Pereyra and Xiomara Fortuna, who could easily have been respective influences on Yusa...if anyone outside of the Dominican Republic knew who they were, unfortunately.

Great music does not have a 3 month live span if the CD comes out at the end of year. cafe tacuba is timeless.

YESS to guincho, zizek, and monareta!!! but what, no babasonicos?!?!??! carolina!!! ximena sariñana is good, but kinda booooring. julieta unplugged was excellent, especially the song with marisa monte, and the remake of "de mis pasos" with juan son.

cafe tacuba was 2007... i agree, calle 13 doesn't need anyone's help anymore, and the song with cafe tacvba is overrated.

he dicho.

Ximena Sariñana's record is very good.
I totally missed her last summer @ The Latin-American Music Conference (LAMC).

Also the almbum "Reptilectric" by Zoe (recently released) is excellent.

I'm surprise Cafetacuba is not on the list. In my opinion, their "Sino" CD was one of the best pop/rock songs coming from Latin America in 2007-2008.
My recommendations - Quiero Ver, Tengo Todo.
