Todd Sickafoose
“Bye Bye Bees”
Playing Wednesday at Le Poisson Rouge
(158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village)
Get: Tickets ($15)| Directions

With his Tiny Resistors, bassist Todd Sickafoose has crafted an indie-jazz record for the history books. Like many of his generation, the Bay Area native is hard to pin down as a traditional standards-and-solos jazz artist. He steals from the languages of indie rock, soul jazz, and prog rock to make instrumental music with truly broad appeal. Tiny Resistors is peppered with twee celesta and glockenspiel, pizzicato violins, rich bass tones and remarkably few solos. Then there are some high-profile special guests: Ani Di Franco and Andrew Bird. This track, “Bye Bye Bees,” begins as a delicate study in texture and counterpoint, and spirals into a rollicking, all-out jam.
