Metropolis Ensemble presents a seductive vision of classical music’s future: young violin virtuosos and guys in jeans playing pieces on laptops. Together, they make music that is both emotionally stirring and progressive. Since its founding in 2006, the ensemble has worked towards making itself an orchestra for the iPod generation—doing things like remixing Stravinsky’s "The Rite of Spring" and sharing the stage with indie rock darlings like Deerhoof. Beyond these crafty marketing strategies, the group has established itself as a prolific new music machine. Thursday and Friday nights at Le Poisson Rouge (hardly a traditional classical venue), the Metropolis Ensemble plays a program called "Hallucinations" (hardly a traditional program title), featuring new compositions from the likes of 20-something female Iranian composer Gity Razaz and Brazilian electronic musician Ricardo Romaneiro. To get a sense of what the group sounds like, download this composition, “Flashbacks,” which was recorded at an LPR concert in 2009. It's by Polish composer Jakub Ciupinski.
