Vijay Iyer and Craig Taborn
"One for Blount" (Vijay Iyer)
Playing SATURDAY at: The Miller Theater at Columbia University
(2960 Broadway at 116th Street, Morningside Heights)
Get: Tickets | Directions

You’ve heard about dueling banjos. But this weekend, Columbia University’s Miller Theater brings us something even better. Two youngbuck jazz piano wizards will grace the stage on side-by-side Steinway grands. Vijay Iyer is an acclaimed jazz stylist with eclectic extracuricular activities that include cognitive psychological research and producing for the hipster rap group Das Racist. Craig Taborn is an accomplished pianist in his own right with a history of delving into jazz-techno synths on the side. This track, from Iyer’s recent solo piano album, Solo, departs from “jazz” as we know it, bringing in both a rock 'n' roll intensity and a harmonic palette straight out of Bartok.
