Made up of three veteran sidemen (and women), the Honey Ear Trio is a sax-bass-drums trio with a fresh sound. Bassist Erik Lawrence incorporates live electronics and loops that manipulate the sound of his upright bass into shimmering waves of sound. Meanwhile, drummer Allison Miller lays down slinky grooves as cascades of notes spill from Erik Lawrence’s saxophone. The result, as heard in “Steampunk Serenade,” is something akin to the progressive, funky jazz of Medeski Martin & Wood, but more organic and rough around the edges. The band's debut album is set to release in March 2011.
