Experimental composer, singer, musician, dancer Jen Shyu wears more than a few hats. Raised in Illinois to parents of Taiwanese and East Timorian decent, Shyu later travelled to her parents’ homelands to do some musical research, and it's no surprise that the experience has deeply shaped her music. This acapella song, “Mother Cow’s Companion,” from the album Jade Tounge and performed by Shyu’s rapturous, larger-than-life voice, is a rendition of a Taiwanese folk tune she collected. Her performance blurs the line between ancient music and new music. Here’s what she’s singing:

Daughter, you are a grown-up now as we parents have raised you with care
As we are going to separate soon, Mother truly can't bear the sorrow
Daughter, you will have to serve the rice bowl for another family in a few days
When you live in their home, you must be obedient to your in-laws

Download the song above or check her out tonight at Barbès.
