While the clarinet may have its share of detractors who bemoan the instrument’s inherent squeakiness, the larger bass clarinet and its rich, low tones are much beloved in jazz circles. On his album Kelenia, Bass clarinetist (and music educator) Oran Etkin has brought his instrument into dialogue with an unlikely genre: traditional West African griot music. Employing a pared-down instrumentation of bass, percussion, guitar, and balafon (folk xylophone), Etkin allows his Malian sidemen to take charge of the groove. The only “jazz” here takes place in Etkin’s tasteful clarinet improvisations
