Featured Playlist: New Yorker critic Sasha Frere-Jones
It's safe to call Frere-Jones one of the premier "critics" in music journalism. His essays appear regularly in the New Yorker, where he kicked things off in 2004 by inciting an Arthur Russell revival. His latest entry focused on Sade's comeback album, Soldier of Love. Frere-Jones also maintains his own blog at sashafrerejones.com and his hyper-active on Twitter at @sfj.

I am not usually one to plug any single product, but along the subject of headphones: http://www.etymotic.com/
ER-4
I've had these headphones for about six years now, and they are still the best sound-quality and noise-canceling headphones I have encountered.
- in-ear earbuds: easily portable
- materials: optional foam or rubber buds (I can wear them for hours with my ear aching!)
- repairs: the right ear was shorting out, sent them in and received a free repair!
Commute:
Agree that is depends where you're going and when. Pod-casts are a definite staple too!
