The Berkeley-bred band Morning Benders may have just moved to New York, but they are steadily crafting an image that befits a band from California's Bay Area. For one, the cover of their new album Big Echo, out tomorrow on Rough Trade, is a brightly-colored, Degas-esque depiction of a beach scene. And this track from the new record sounds like a distorted take on some long-lost Beach Boys tune. "Promises" dances between light and dark, anchored by a fuzzy guitar that tipsily bobs and weaves on a floaty melody, and warped harmonies that hint at gloom.
