The Haitian rara band Djarara have been bringing the energy of Haitian street music to New York for years, and tonight, the members of the group, all Haitian and Haitian-Americans, perform at a benefit for victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake. Sounding a bit like a march but less austere and more celebratory, rara is a type of festival music that originated in Haiti. While upbeat, rara isn't completely happy-go-lucky, as the music style as been used as a vehicle to address issues such as poverty. Though this medley by Djarara is an instrumental, the tune is tinged with the same kind of emotional complexity that's typified the music in the past, and will surely characterize tonight's performance. Great post, I wish I'd been able to make it in to this show!
But looking forward to seeing Djarara and the documentary film Other Side of the Water this Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum
