The late 19th/early 20th century explorer Isabelle Eberhardt’s life was short – but full of adventure. Now, she’s the subject of a brand new opera. Today: the story of the Russian nihilist’s daughter who traveled North Africa dressed as a man – and the songs she’s inspired. Plus, the composer, vocalist, filmmaker and MacArthur Fellow Meredith Monk joins us with a new remix album.

Missy Mazzoli: Song From the Uproar

The intrepid, Swiss-born adventurer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904) began traveling the North African deserts on horseback at age 20, often dressing as a man. She died in a flood at the age of 27, but left behind a body of work, including a wealth of travel writing. Today: composer Missy Mazzoli joins us to talk about her new opera, “Song From the Uproar: The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt,” which premieres tomorrow at The Kitchen. And, we get a live preview.
