DJ Spooky's Antarctica

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Many artists have toured the world; they just haven't toured as much of it as DJ Spooky, whose latest project is built around sounds he recorded in Antarctica.  Soundcheck's live broadcast from the Re:Mix Lab at Chelsea Market will feature this composer, author, and producer, whose own remixes include everything from the film "Re-Birth Of A Nation" to his intermedia work "Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica."

Sam, if you know Paul's work then you know he's remixed and worked with Reich a few times -- see the 1999 Reich Remixed album on Nonesuch. This piece is quite influenced by NYC minimalism but I wouldn't say it's any more nor less Reich than Glass or Adams that suffuses the repetitive structure. I do question what the iPad is really providing to this piece, but without being able to see it, it's tough to tell. As for Spooky's patter, he's coherent and provides an interesting rundown of a confluence of ideas --- hardly a name dropper, he connects concepts with ease and fluidity through understanding, not names. The question is whether the art reflects the ideas as successfully as Spooky wants it to. / tV

Not sure what other commentators above meant..thought it was a very creative piece, idea, concept.
Hopefully the music also makes thin about Antarctica and glob warming..our places and actions in this world.

Thanks for a wonderful show.

The only thing worse than DJ Spooky's music is the man himself. A relentless egotist and total phony...steals all of his music, "remix" culture or not. Steve Reich's "Piano Phase" in the cello part there...whatever...
