Psycho-Opera 101

« previous episode | next episode »

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

There's a diva... a ram's horn... and a lot of intense singing. But this is far from your typical opera. Today: A look at the "psycho-opera" written by and starring Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, called "Stop the Virgens." Plus, she'll perform a song from the show, live. And: Acclaimed young pianist Joyce Yang previews her upcoming album at the Steinway in the Soundcheck studio.

'Stop the Virgens'

The latest project by Karen O, lead singer of indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is called “Stop the Virgens” – and it’s an operatic blend of technology, music, dance, and theater. Karen O and music director Sam Spiegel join us in the studio to explain the concept behind the world's first "psycho-opera." Plus, Karen and the show's guitarist, Jason Grisell, perform a live acoustic rendition of a song from the opera.

In Studio: Joyce Yang

It’s not all that surprising that pianist Joyce Yang has a side interest in visual arts. The young critically acclaimed soloist has synesthesia, a neurological condition which causes her to perceive music in shapes and colors. Her debut album, Collage, will be released this later this month – but before that, we’ll get to hear some of it live in the studio.
