The Muppets have always been a musical bunch of weirdos. From “Bein’ Green” to “Mahna-Mahna,” we take a look back at the music of Jim Henson’s unruly puppet gang as they once again take to the silver screen. Joining us will be composer Paul Williams ("Rainbow Connection") and Craig Shemin, President of the Jim Henson Legacy and former Muppet writer.
Ray Charles and Kermit perform "Bein' Green" on The Cher Show in 1975.

I grew up with the Muppets -- I never missed a show. Now a musician myself, I "covered" Rainbow Connection through a German cabaret filter...

Hate to be a downer, but at Jim Henson's funeral " it's not east being green" & "one person" are two beautiful songs for all of us to say goodbyes. You can find these moments on YouTube.
There’s a fantastic on-line radio station that plays Muppet music all day, every day. Check it out here Muppet fans…

The on-line Muppet fan forum is also the best on the internet!

I really have to comment on the VIOLENCE advocated on the show today; really, MUPPET HEAD-BASHING songs!!! Now you've clearly gone too far. We could hear their little cries of anguish all too clearly; please, stop the madness! :)
I had to turn the volume down (no, not from the violence) for a lot of the muppet portion and I assume I missed the big reveal of the Mah Na Mah Na song's history per Wikipedia, which is from a porn movie. I found this out after listening to Luxuriamusic.com and seeing the composer, and looking him up. Hilarious. Wikipedia says; "Mah Nà Mah Nà" debuted as part of Umiliani's soundtrack for the italian mondo film Svezia, inferno e paradiso (Sweden: Heaven and Hell (1968), a pseudo-documentary about wild sexual activity and other behaviour in Sweden. The song accompanied a scene in the film set in a sauna which gave its original title "Viva la Sauna Svedese" (Hooray for the Swedish Sauna)." Love it.
The Muppets have meant the world to me and my family, influencing our sense of humour and musicality. So much so that when I had to choose my 'father and daughter' dance for my wedding it was to "The Rainbow Connection" ending with everyone joining us singing and dancing together.
It could not have been more perfect.
I am listening to WNYC on my phone and ITS NOT streaming MUPPETS interview. Its streaming take away from 6am this morning. very dissappointed.
Paul's work for "A Muppet Christmas Carol" is AMAZING!
Muppet Christmas Carol has some of the best music, and many have become my holiday standards....."It feels like Christmas" is classic
I know it's the new movie that's brought the subject up, but I notice the conversation keeps coming back to the TV show, which was more meaningful to me growing up. After all, it was the TV show that brought these characters and their music into our homes 5 nights a week. It was the only show my whole family, from me through my great-grandparents, could watch and enjoy together.
My all time favorite Muppet song is from Emmit Otter "When the River Meets the Sea." It is just beautiful and timeless. I first loved it when I first watched the TV special, and even more when I saw it in the stage production year before last. That one never gets old for me.
Some of the newer videos running on YouTube ("Bohemian Rhapsody" in particular) are a riot!
My husband, Joe, worked as a muppet in the early 60s to do a short on the Ed Sullivan show.
It was adorable! a little egg turned into a rock band and Joe was the voice of the band.
I found the clip last year!
I can't hear "Let it Be" now without thinking of the muppets version on Sesame Street: "Letter B."
Rowlf's "I'd never harm an onion ... so why do they make me cry?" is a c lassic
A shout out to my mother and father, Marilyn and Alan Scott who wrote music for Sesame Street and at least one Muppet special (a valentines day show with Mia Farrow). They adored working with Jim Henson and Frank Oz and I was lucky enough to meet them (and the Muppets) on set.
Alan Scott
Paul Williams' music for Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas is tops of my list. In the Muppet Movie, the song Gonzo sings, titled "I'm going to Get Back There Someday" is simply amazing.
Plus... Rowlf the dog turned us to Jascha Heifetz to a whole generation of toddlers.
The Manna Manna song for sure was my absolute favorite. It really ushered me straight into American culture.
The first two albums I ever bought, as a wee little three year old, was Kiss Dynasty and a Sesame Street record. ABC-DEF-GHI sung by Big Bird has had a lasting effect on me. Big Bird discovers the alphabet written on the sidewalk and thinks it is one big word. He sings it as one multi-syllabic word. Amazing. Rainbow Connection is simply magical. Just like the Muppets.
The Manna Manna song for sure was my absolute favorite. It really ushered me straight into American culture.
My favorite episode was the one with Harry Belafonte. He sang a song with African masked puppets, Turn the World Around. Even decades later it brings tears to my eyes.
One of my all-time favorite Muppet tracks comes from my personal favorite of the Muppet films. The opening 'Hey a Movie!' segment from 'The Great Muppet Caper' will always stand out as an amazing Muppet moment and a very film memory of my childhood.
Being a huge Jim Henson fan, my favorite Muppet music moment has to pretty much be the entire soundtrack to The Muppet Movie. From Rainbow Connection to The Magic Store finale, it's easily the strongest Muppet movie soundtrack in my opinion. Absolute classic.
As for the new movie soundtrack, I enjoyed it immensely as well. The Barbershop Quartet version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was hilarious.
Harry! BelafOnte!
'Turn the World Around' performance was so
Awesome!!!
2 favorite moments, both of them Animal-related:
The previously mentioned Animal/Rita Moreno "Fever", and his drum battle with Buddy Rich:

The "Gambler" - my all time favorite muppet standard
One favorite of many is the Muppet Show rendition of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," sung by animals in the forest as they are pursued by hunters.
The entire "Muppet Movie" Soundtrack and "John Denver & The Muppets: A Christmas Together" are genuine timeless classic albums.
A favorite is "Movin' Right Along" sung by Kermit and Fozzie in The Muppet Movie. Some of the lyrics are "...footloose and fancy free..." and that is how this song makes me feel.
The Muppets never got more psychedelic than "Can You Picture That? by Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem.
And Alice's Cooper performance of School's Out, is one of the most punk things ever on children's television.
Animal and Rita Moreno performing Fever - hot and hilarious!
My favorite Muppet-music moment was when I got to cover "Hole In The Washtub" from Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas; a childhood dream come true. Get the record for free here - http://thepriestessandthefool.com/
