An Astronomer's Playlist

Friday, September 03, 2010

Gustav Holst’s The Planets are a classical music favorite; but Holst wasn’t the first composer to write about the planets (or the astrological signs, to be specific), and he sure wasn’t the last.

Astronomer and author Andrew Fraknoi joins us to look at the long and very productive meeting of astronomy and music.

That's the best album cover of all time! (OK, so Whipped Cream and Other Delights is really the best. But this one is second. :)

Hi KW; Man, or Astroman? are actually from the Industrial Design department of Auburn University, then eventually piecemeal around Atlanta. It's kind of outerspace here though.

Missed the show, sorry to say - because one of the easiest and most jarring planetary songs I can think of that seems appropriate is Astronomy Domine by Barrett/Pink Floyd, a chaotic otherworldly lovely song.

How about "Humans from Earth" by T Bone Burnett on the great soundtrack from the Wim Wenders film
"Until the End of the World"

Don't know if they used it to wake-up or who brought it but there is a great picture of the Grooves in Orbit disk on the Intl .Space Station on the NRBQ website. Smackaroo from same would be a great wake-up number.
