In Studio: Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

It’s the end of an era -- and sound artists Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger have a Requiem to mark the occasion. Their Requiem for Fossil Fuels combines live vocalists singing the traditional Latin Requiem text with the processed sounds of the city. We hear an excerpt live in the Soundcheck studio.

See a performance of Requiem for Fossil Fuels at the World Financial Center on Friday, November 12th. More information here.

Guests:

Sam Auinger and Bruce Odland

This is a beautiful piece--I was so glad to be able to hear it, after hearing about it for a while. Odland and Auinger provide a perspective that completely changes how we hear our environment. The fact that they can create such beauty with these sources inspires me to "talk back" to the soundscape imposed on me, against my will--which, if it does not make the city quieter, at least it makes it more bearable.

That was unbearable. Had to turn the volume down.

To tie two segments together: Mahler predicted that one day cities would pass laws to try to control noise!
