When Robin Hood Hits the Musical Target

« previous episode | next episode »

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

When Robin Hood steals from the rich, he’s often accompanied by an epic soundtrack. We'll look at the music of Robin Hood films, from the Oscar-winning 1938 version to a ‘50s Daffy Duck cartoon to a hit Bryan Adams theme from the ‘90s.

Also, the artist formerly known as Yundi Li adds his voice to the Chopin 200th birthday year with a new EMI collection of Chopin's 21 Nocturnes. He plays live in our studio.

Robin Hood in Music

With his new cinematic update of the Robin Hood legend, director Ridley Scott has some big shoes to fill.

Yundi

Success came early to pianist Yundi Li . At age 18, he won first prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland, and the following year launched a spate of recordings for the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. He now goes by simply Yundi. With his pop idol looks, he's a household name in China. He joins us to share music from his new all-Chopin recording – his debut on EMI – and to perform live in our studio.

Scoring Robin Hood

It’s interesting to compare the way different composers have approached period piece films over the years.  In 1938, when Erich Wolfgang Korngold composed his classic score to The Adventures of Robin Hood, there was no “period instrument” movement – what we now call “early music” was the province of scholars and theoreticians, and was hardly ever actually played by living musicians.
