A decade ago, Osvaldo Golijov, an Argentine composer based in Boston, was tasked with writing a passion, a musical setting of one of the four gospels. He adapted the text of the Gospel according to St. Mark, and came up with La Pasión Según San Marcos (St. Mark Passion), an 85-minute, in-your-face work built on African American, South American, Cuban, European, and Jewish music. A new recording sheds new light on the piece. He shares some of it with us and talks about his busy career.
