Sofia Rei Koutsovitis

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

Sofia Rei Koutsovitis is a composer and singer who was born in Argentina but expanded her music tastes early on. She fell in love with Brazilian music as a child, got into jazz when she moved to the States to study music and ended up working with several Peruvian musicians. She joins us to play her mix of all those rhythms live in the studio.

The entire Sube Azul CD is awesome and authentic. My favorite song is "Imaginaria" (track #10), which has mood-elevating dynamics that make me smile and shake what my mama gave me. The flamenco thing going on midsong and toward the end is such a beautiful display of Sofia's enviable vocals riding on and through complex rhythms. I've got a flower for my hair, but I need to shop for my flamenco skirt ahora!
