Searching for Female Rappers

Friday, April 23, 2010

Female emcees, or "femcees," have always been a minority in hip-hop. But in this decade, they became almost an endangered species. The few women in the genre are not nearly as successful or engaged as rappers like Queen Latifah or Foxy Brown, who made inroads in the 1980s and '90s.

To examine this question we're joined by Quentin B. Huff, who wrote a column about the issue for PopMatters.com; and Lah Tere, a member of the Bronx-based hip-hop group Rebel Diaz. She is also the founder of Mommas Hip Hop Kitchen, an annual all female hip hop showcase

Nall, female rappers are everywhere and some are very good ones too. It's that the industry requires so much that most are discouraged in the process of becoming. Me, myself, am a femcee and I just want to do everything right so i can reap the full benefits of my ability. I am a single mother of two and a student also, so it's kinda hard to juggle that with becoming a star. Dont get me wrong it's possible but it take time and work and most of all, money. Oh they exist, chk out me and my sista music on myspace.com/vicious-dmadnez

BLAKLIONZ from NYC

I'm looking for a few female rappers who would like an opportunity to be featured on something enormous.
This unique project will be hosted by a KNOWN female artist in the industry and mixed by a New York FM Radio DJ. So certain artists will be mentioned on the radio.

This original compilation is set to be on 60+ websites. Promotion is an important key in any project that is released and the promotion set for this project will give the artists featured that extra push. A 1 hour Internet Radio interview is set to promote this project, with numerous email blasts to more than 200,000 (guaranteed) with FM/Internet/Satellite radio play, with magazine and a few blog write ups. So you are guaranteed to be heard. If you choose to participate and don't make it on the mixalbum then you will have your own 1 hour internet radio interview to promote your music. It's a win win situation. There is no one else offering such a great opportunity! Shop around and see for yourself.

All this and more for $25 and your quality mp3. This is obviously not your ordinary mixtape project. It's way better. This is something new, original and very different. Brought to you by females, for females! Email me back for further info of where to send your mp3's and payment.

There are only a few spots left!

Curry Kid from Strong I

Peace and Blessings.

I will be listening to the show in a few, but some general comments in case they were not covered.

1. Women were well represented when Hip Hop was first commited to wax, it has been a bottleneck that tightened to an eye-dropper in the 31 years since. The forces behind it are the same as those who kept Hip Hop (seemingly) artificially young. For every 'Young/Yung' or 'Murder/Murda' this, something 'Dro/Baggs/Trees' or 'Pimp/Mac/Playa' there are at least two talented MCs (sex shouldn't matter) who put down their mic because they don't want to subjugate themself, their art or their message to sell records. They find more honor in asking if one wants fries with that.

2. I don't think Queen Latifah the MC (of 20 years ago) would recognize Queen Latifah the actor or Dana Owens the singer.

3. When we evaluate music for OTTR we base it on quality and creativity. Not the willingness of the performer to: be naked, assume a ludicrous name, or rhyme about/act like something out of the rap starter kit.

4. Whether Nikki Minaj goes quadruple diamond or next week we are saying, 'Barbie who?' says nothing of her talent or creativity as a lyricist. MC and Rapper are not interchangeable terms. The sad part is i have it on good authority that she does actually have some skills. But Young Money is not marketing skills. In her case they are pandering to the lowest common denominator.

5. The only difference with R&B or Hip Hop Soul (in my eyes most of what Top 40 Rap and R&B/Soul radio stations play these days is the latter) is that we are not to the point where every singer thinks she needs to be a sex symbol. Otherwise the same structure is in place. You only need look as far as the trajectories of the careers of talented singers like Mariah, Janet and Christina Aguillera. All started out as talented singers who are easy on the eyes and have devolved into eye candy that requires less autotune.

One Love,
Curry Kid

Great article ... but if you actually google "female rappers" you will notice a top search result for a young lady by the name of Kellee Maize.

Many are calling her the best female rapper ever.

She raps intelligently (and sings beautifully) about everything from tarot to the age of aquarius.

She's featured on a new blog practically every day, so I would suggest doing more homework.

Mainstream is dying fast!

Hello-B from minneapolis

Minneapolis has a thriving indie hip-hop scene and is very women friendly. For the past 4 years we have hosted the Be Girl Be Summit, a multidisciplinary event celebrating women in hip-hop. The summit brings together international, national and local girls and women in hip-hop to Minneapolis for dialogues, art-making, screenings, performances, workshops and networking opportunities.

The event has hosted Dr. Roxanne Shanté, Lady Pink, Medusa, DJ Pam the Funkstress, Ursula Rucker and local artists Dessa from Doomtree, Desdemona, and Psalm One.

There is a female hip hop community, you just haven't looked hard enough to find it yet.

Perhaps because hip hop has evolved into the chauvinist and materialistic sounding board. Any other voices who are not about bitches, benjamins and ho are ignored.

The role of women in hip hop has always been about being a decoration and sex object for the men in hip hop. The hip hop culture does not encourage or want to hear women being strong, stating their opinions, showing their talent or being anything other than a show piece for the men.

great show- I always look for good female rappers for my daughter to listen to and its too bad there is not more.--I guess we have MIA and Santigold now?
one gripe about your program- since its about music its weird how bad you always are about que-ing the songs - Unusually long intros and not the snippet you look for- today but not only today. I noticed this often.
So a bit more preparing would be nice- and make sure you use good recordings- no bad MP3s- it really is audible sometimes you get sounds from a poor source.

This is because since the early 90s hip-hop has become all about macho posturing, rather than the diverse form it was in the 80s. There's no room for any other style of expression at least in the mainstream.
