Kristeen Young

Monday, October 26, 2009

Singer and songwriter Kristeen Young has been rocking the piano and grabbing the attention of stars like David Bowie and Morrissey. She toured with Morrissey for two years, but was dismissed after she made on-stage remarks about his sexuality. She joins us to share her four-octave vocal range and hard-charging piano style with a live performance.

Hey Milos -

I also enjoyed John's interview very much too - he does his research before he asks the questions, which I appreciated very much.

Reading the glowing and scathing comments about Kristeen Young (I'm in the second category) reminds me that just as God is too big to fit inside one religion, Music is too big to fit inside one genre. Where I experience painful noise and an almost physical sense of revulsion in Young's work, others experience excitement, intensity and awe. I'd like to be glib and say Young is lucky in that regard. But the fact remains that it all comes down to personal taste and, I suspect, the way that values change with the generations.

The real hero here is John Schaefer, who applies his journalistic objectivity fairly across the board. Tomorrow he will probably feature somebody I find wonderful, that others will despise. Long may he reign!

Regardless of her voice, i love the explosive percussiveness of the first song they performed. Defiantly leads to me to dig deeper.

What got everyone's panties in such a dreadful bunch? I enjoyed the live performance so much! Not everything can be ladeda, bunnies and rainbows! Sheez! I was so struck by Young's originality and really trememdous sense of drama. And drama's not a dirty word! And what a great observation during the interview - to compare or connect Young to opera. Thanks for intorducing me to the music of Kristeen Young.

i usually like what you present here but this didn't resonate with me at all. seems too contrived, too discordant and too gauche, and not even in an interesting, ironic kind of way.

My, but this performance seems to have stirred strong feelings. Better than complacency, I'd say. I found it refreshing and sincere, myself.

I think her performance was great, and the interviewer's questions were thoughtful and interesting. Kristeen has an amazing vocal range and beautiful control, hard to appreciate after only hearing two songs. The negative comments here are mean-spirited and definitely unwarranted.

I don't see why so many are bashing her. She's just fine. Orphans was a fantastic album.

Live radio may not be the best venue for her voice, however, her new CD is amazing, and includes a great duet with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.

John, you are such a nice, patient, open minded person to give Kristeen Young a forum for her work. After one hearing of her cacophonous, pretentious, unintelliglble, artless use of voice plus instruments (can't exactly call it "music"), I have no desire to repeat the experience, ever. But that's your job as a music journalist, and God bless you for it. You've introduced me to a lot of great musicians over the years, for which I thank you. And today you warned me, by publicizing her, a person I will avoid at all cost.

I'm sorry but she's terrible. Normally I would not comment on artists I don't like but I just donated to the fall fundraiser and I'm feeling entitled. :D

Kristeen, you'd be more edgy if you stopped giggling like a girl.

This is one of those Sound Check bands that we're supposed to believe is "better than they sound."

John, I respect your open minded approach to music, but sometimes screeching is just screeching.

I suspect she has a decent voice but she's too "intense" and "interesting" to sing well. This 2nd song sounds a bit like old Alanis Morrisette/Tori Amos/angry cat.

CJ - agreed; this is noise. She sounds like a cross between Tory Amos and a sick cat. Please, no more live sets for Ms. Young.
