Carly Simon

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Carly Simon was in her 20s when she wrote songs like "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation." Over 30 years later, she re-recorded them on a new album, Never Been Gone. They came out so different that Simon says it was like "a visit with a psychiatrist." She joins us to talk about the making of her latest album, and about her recent lawsuit filed against HearMusic, the music label once backed by Starbucks, over the promotion of a 2008 release.

Carly wrote that song way before the HOTCAKES, Joni and Dylan release date fiasco.

Thanks to Carly and Ben for taking a page from the Beatles reverse play book. kudos to john Schaffer and his crack team of audio sleuths who took up carly's on air challenge as to who the vain mystery man of 30 years ago is... when decipered the reverse track identifies him as "DAVID"....
carly's David is the very same "free man in paris" that joni mitchell sang of.... The same David who in a nod to dr. frankenstein molded, shaped , stiched and breathed life into his immortal monster...Cher . David Geffen... the tiny tyrant of tinsel town. the machievelli of the music world... the vainest man in los Angeles. which by definition makes him... the vainest man in the world....

What a coincidence to hear Carly just now.

I had the most wonderful experience last night. I was on the Port Imperial ferry, standing at the front of the boat as we skimmed across the Hudson and I suddenly remembered "Working Girl" and its use of Carly's "Let the River Run" and searched my iPod, found it, and listened to it (twice) on the short ride home, and it was such a lovely feeling. I was commuting to my first home that I bought after coming out of a really bad relationship, and I was gleeful as I listened to her voice and thought of the slimy ex-, left behind (literally, he's in Jersey City and live above there now) and my new life now, and all that's ahead.

Thanks, Carly.

"Let the River Run" -- now one of the most heartbreaking title sequences on film.

A wonderful anthem, then and now.

Ouch! There is no voice left at all. Remember Joe DiMagio. Don't embarrass yourself.

I LOVE it Carly! Phenomenal!

So, who's "You're So Vain" about?

Wait a second. Is she saying she CAN'T do a new album because of this Starbucks things? I don't quite buy it. Something is fishy.

I bet this is just another re-do like Joni Mitchell did. Let's see if it sells.

Doesn't anyone write anymore?
