Broadway’s crippling case of bombast

Thursday, June 04, 2009

Broadway has had its strongest season ever in ticket sales. But artistically, all is not well. According to New York magazine theater critic Jesse Green, this year’s biggest musicals were loud, bombastic and visually assaulting. With the Tony Awards this Sunday he’ll tell us what’s ailing the Great White Way.

Guests:

Jesse Green

While your guest Jesse Green has some valid points, they are totally lost in his bombastic assault. Please, if you're going to have a guest talk about the theatre, get one who still LIKES the theatre. And that, sadly, is probably not a critic. Surely not one from NY Magazine, well known for its theatre attack dogs. Get Jeff Lunden next time. Or a person who works in the theatre, not someone paid to bludgeon it. Yuck.

whats wrong with B'way? that they've not come up with an original idea in a few decades for one. they rehash the old over and over. and now they need to borrow music from rock - and some of it bad rock - to attract an audience that is not discerning in any manner. put some people in costumes, add some music, locate it on B'way and the drones come running. B'way has been on a steady progression of providing Pop-Art, to feed an audience addicted to junk-food and junk entertainment. lots of calories, not much nutrition. not much art.

I am a 48 year old highly overeducated white maile (JD, PhD), and I LOVED metal hair band music in the '80s, and so did my highly overeducated wife. We are looking forward to seeing Rock of Ages on Saturday. We also enjoy "serious" dramatic theatre.

Here! Here! Your guest is so on the mark. I am a Broadway actor and it makes me cringe! Also, to assume that the audience is stupid is insulting and adds to the dumbing down of Broadway - heart-breaking.

Someone should sue the producers of these shows for permanent hearing damage. Laugh, but it's absoutely true, as we've heard for years -(until we can't hear anymore.)

I don't think buying a ticket to a Broadway show lets the responsible parties off the hook in the same way that the Yankees are not responsible if you get hit by a foul ball.

It may be overstatement, but your critic absolutely has his head up in a place you can;t mention on Radio.

Give me a break, and dont be so condescending.

I'm 50, I grew up with that, and yes, I am listening to wnyc (and a member at that too!)

stop being so persnickety and a populist blue-nose.

PS: Hair was the first one.
Jesus Christ Superstar was the second in the early 1970's/

"overstatement in sound", Oh my God, is that ever true. The loudspekers will blast you out of the house, and even worse, the sound is so distorted in the balcony that it is torture to try and listen to it. that includes Guys and dolls and west side Story which are not even Rock.
