Wednesday, January 28, 2009

The arts world is looking to the Obama Administration for new policy, increased funding, and a new head for the National Endowment for the Arts. Some are calling for a "secretary of the arts" in Obama's cabinet. Today we look back at the life of one the most powerful figures in 20th-century arts administration. Juilliard president Joseph W. Polisi joins us to talk about his book, "American Muse: The Life and Times of William Schuman."

How did Schuman become such a power broker in NYC cultural life? Aren't composers supposed to be stuck in the ivory tower?

I remember performing "George Washington Bridge" when I was in high school in Kansas--I think of that piece every time I see or cross the bridge over 10 years later.

I am more familiar with Schuman's music. I remember performing his "George Washington Bridge" when I was an undergrad at Hartt.
