And the winners are anything but predictable. Today, film music historian and Variety writer Jon Burlingame walks us through the various contenders.

The remarkable thing about Rahman's score is that it effectively took Indian stylings, rhythms, and instruments and created a score that was appealing to Western ears. While Rahman has scored many other movies designed for Indian audiences, this movie provided an extra challenge, for the music was not made to appeal to the Indian audience.
I thought that the Slumdog score was the best because it masterfully combined the East and the West in underscoring a cross-cultural movie. And it worked.
