To some of us, holidays in New York are about "Silver Bells" on every street corner. To others, they mean Gridlock Alert Days, clanging radiators, and carols blaring from stores. Today, we'll look at why December is such a noisy time of year -- and what you can do about it. Also: some jazzy, seasonal tunes from pianist Marcus Roberts and his trio.

The Marcus Roberts Trio

On his recent album, “New Orleans Meets Harlem, Vol. 1” pianist Marcus Roberts re-imagines music by Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Thelonious Monk and other greats. He joins us with a couple of swinging holiday treats.

Holiday Music and Noise – Which is Which?

The relentless parade of familiar holiday tunes pouring out of store speakers is an easy target for Grinchy types like me. I don’t like shopping to begin with, and I also find it hard to ignore background music, so a store that accompanies my feeble attempts at being an “educated consumer” with Santa and Rudolph and Frosty is not a store I’m gonna want to spend a lot of time in.
