Alfonso Velez

Monday, November 10, 2008

The son of a Mexican mathematician and a Cuban architect, Alfonso Velez was raised in Mexico City and later lived in Buenos Aires and Moscow. He earned his chops as a member of the Washington, D.C. indie band Monopoli. His solo work is filled with folk-style fingerpicking and high, sweet vocals, and he draws comparisons to Elliott Smith and Paul Simon. Velez and his band join us for a live performance.

Heard him for the first time a few years ago and fell in love with his playing and voice. If he's playing in your town, you have to go see him - and buy the cds

The first time I saw Alfonso was when I showed up at Cafe Vivaldi a little early for another act...I caught the last 2 songs of his set and knew there was something very special there. I immediately started booking shows for him. This brilliant, soft spoken world traveler is the consummate story-teller folk artist. The real deal. He was a favorite of XM radio in DC and he is quickly becoming a favorite of the singer/songwriter scene of New York's lower east side.

Alfonso is indeed a rare talent, with a fine tenor voice, great story telling and a broad range. And pay attention to the backup band, some of the finest musicians on the East Coast ... !!! A real treat!

This guy should be on "Late Night." His music is real and is sung from the heart. Rhythm section rocks, too. Made me dance.

I saw Alfonso a few weeks back and he brings a personal touch that gets lost with much of the contrived pop music of today. Your chance to see the channeling of Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and something indefinable and special into a totally new experience.

Alfonso is a diamond in the rough - a truly great songwriter. The new album sounds darn promising and y'all better get with it!
