The Mountain Goats are known for their low-fidelity recording approach, hard-strumming acoustic guitar lines and ultra-literate lyrics. The band's new album, “Heretic Pride,” is just out and frontman John Darnielle performs highlights.
you're missing the point, DaveA: the songs NOT about a war with any countries, other peoples, etc.; it's about a war with one's self.

from the perspective of an insider, war of any length may be measured as a long war. From the outside, time passes easier and our marking of length of a war is measured against our marking of our normal lives. Calling WW1 that was a mere 4 years in time, or WW2 that was a mere 6 years in time, anything but long is silly.
