The Tonys Roundup
Monday, June 16, 2008
The 62nd annual Tony awards pretty much conformed to expectation on last night at Radio City Music Hall. The sincere and salsa-inflected "In the Heights" trumped the wildly audacious rock musical "Passing Strange" to take the Tony for best new musical. Lincoln Center Theater's acclaimed revival of South Pacific took home the most awards with seven Tony Awards overall. Time Out New York theater critic David Cote joins us to offer his reaction to Broadway’s biggest night.

I was going to correct the theatre critic re: the name of the singer who starred in the original version of "South Pacific" but I see that Reidar Bornholdt beat me to it. I'm glad that we "non-professional" theater critics keep the "pros" on their toes. (Pardon the corny rhyme. It was not intentional.)
Who is this guy Enzo Pina? Ezio Pinza starred in
South Pacific.
This was the first revival of South Pacific, whereas Gypsy was just up a few years ago. Even though I think Gypsy is a far superior show (SP feel very dated to me, and not in a good way), it wasn't going to win, no matter what.
Solid broadcast, I think, even if they stole the Whoopi-in-musicals schtick from the Oscars.
Broadway producers or not-for-profits in the bigtime - who won?
Great that they let non-nominated shows. It was an advertisement for NYC theatre. Smart!
Non-appearance of Stephen Sondheim for his lifetime achievement award (What's the story?)
Jim Norton's deserved win (Raul Esparza was the favorite).
SUNDAY IN THE PARK was sadly stiffed.
BOEING-BOEING beats the unlucky MACBETH: actor and play!
Patti Lupone is so insane. She has like embodied this caricature of a theatre diva that has only existed in a bizarre stereotype of past broadway legends. She seriously talks like the whole world revolves around her.
It was a mixed night for me. Why did they move so many categories ("Best Book of a Musical" and "Best Choreography") from the prime time slot? Also, Whoopi Goldberg was a tiresome host. But nice to see In the Heights and South Pacific do so well. Both deserved it.
