Pop Star Dreams From the A-List
Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Like Eddie Murphy and Lindsay Lohan before her, Scarlett Johansson is joining the crowd of actors unable to resist the call of pop music. Today we review Johansson's new album of Tom Waits covers, plus we sample some of Hollywood's worst (oh, Bruce Willis) and best (Zooey Deschanel of She & Him) crossover attempts. We talk with Joe Levy, editor in chief of Blender magazine.
Our blog: John Schaefer on movie stars who slum in pop music
Tell us: What do you think of movie stars who attempt pop-music crossovers? Is there a star you wish would record an album?

Not mentioned is 30 Seconds to Mars with Jared Leto.
Oddly credible songwriting for the intended audience,
Can anyone identify the song by Minnie Driver played on the show? It was beautiful and she certainly can sing.
SOUNDCHECK SAYS: You heard "Beloved" from Minnie Driver's album, "Sea Stories."
actor Wendell Pierce as he and I recorded "Crescent City Tales" with Wendell on Djembe Drum, Lead Vocal and me on Triangle, Tambourine and Vocals. Oh Yeah, an album will be coming in the future.
Scarlett's treatment of Tom Wait's material reminds me of the Dorothy Parker quote, "She runs the gamut from A to B". What a monotonous, dreary, overproduced plod through the work of a spectacular artist!
Someone suggested some athletes. How about Arthur Lee Maye? He sang with various R&B groups in the 1950's, both before and during his baseball stint with the Milwaukee Braves. He also backed up Richard Berry on the original "Louie, Louie". 'nuf said. Lots on the web about him: Spectropop, etc.
I've been waiting for someone to make the Sinead O'Connor reference.
I'm just glad it is not some girl singing in that girly-punk-indie fake accent.
Jeez, what a surprise that you dis Scarlett. OK maybe shes not sucha great singer but neither was Joan as Police Woman who you were very fawning of yesterday. But obviously you're going to go after Johansen since she's a starlet. And how credible is Blender Magazine anyway. (SOmehow I was blessed with a free subscription to that mag and when it ran out it wasn't missed). This discussion like Blender seems pretty high school.
Meryl Streep sings a torch song called "Nobody Understands Me," on a kids record called Philadelphia Chickens by Sandra Boynton. I'd buy her album, she seems to be great at everything.
what abou gwenth palltow. she's got a great voice
The other one worth checking out is Toni Collette & the Finish : Beautiful Awkward Pictures
Will anyone ever forgive Gwyneth Paltrow for making and singing in awful the movie Duets and recording her Musac-version of "Crusin" with Huey Lewis?
Robert Downey Jr. has a great voice!
As to Russell Crowe - TOFOG (both 1 & 2) concerts are some of the best times I've had at music concerts. Russell can certainly sing and his lyrics are very poetic. So if you like his charisma on the screen, in person he's dynamite.
I also have to take issue with your guest's comment - Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts did feature his longtime musician friends, but The Ordinary Fear of God uses all professional musicians, including two from Silverchair and Midnight Oil as well as the talents of Allen Doyle of Great Big Sea.
Go see TOFOG2 live - it's great!
Zooey has a good voice -- noticed it first in "ELF" when she sang "Baby It's Cold Outside". Didn't know that she's in a band -- I'm definitely buying the album.
Oh, and it wasn't real, but the demo Mark Whalberg records in the movie "Boogie Nights" was the funniest thing in that movie.
I was an avid Telly Savalas fan back in the 70's and I had the complete collection of his albums. At that time I enjoyed them, mostly because they were romantic songs.
Did you ever hear his recording?
Ugh, that She and Him stuff is dreadfully twee, and I disagree with the assessment that Ms. Deschanel has a good singing voice.
I hope Ricky Gervais returns to music some day. Can't get enough Seona Dancing.
I was thinking Concrete Blonde, but I'll buy Sinead too, now that you mention it...
Seems singers are often acting - Lyle Lovett and Chris Isaac come to mind... just an easy crossover of professions I think. Plus you have a sound recording facet to every movie ...
Scarlett Johansson not nuanced?
No surprise...neither is her "acting."
(Tom Waits has way too much depth for her.)
Scarlett sounds like Nico
Don't forget about Patrick Swayze and "She's Like The Wind". It's not an album per se but it still gets play on the radio occassionally.
i believe in the early seventies Cassius Clay before becoming Muhamed Ali recorded "Stand by Me" - do you know about that?
brigid bardot or jane birkin with serge gainsberg (sp?)
marilyn monroe
What about Jamie Foxx?? He is a great musician. Excellent voice and can play piano.
Have you heard Michael Imperioli's band...La Dolce Vita? They are great... especially the drummer who is brothers with the guitarist from jeff buckley
Natalie Portman should record a rap album.
#4 but possibly a better interview
I'd like to see Meryl Streep do some recording, if she hasn't already. Her performance towards the end of Postcards from the Edge was pretty amazing.
Forget actors, how about athletes? Anyone remember "Shaq Diesel"?
I'm very glad a young child actor named Will Oldham decided to do music instead.
Would you count Ann Magnuson's work with Kramer as Bongwater? They were pretty awesome.
Don't forget David Hasselhoff -- don't know if that belongs to the best or worst category -- I guess depends whether you ask a German or an American.
What about Jamie Foxx.
scarlett Johanssen
sinead o'connor on downers
"Is there a star you wish would record an album?"
Yeah, Woody Allen.
At least Scarlett uses her voice without being "voiceshopped" unlike some --such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton
Thank god for sound check. That was too much talk of Obama winning the nomination this morning.
Leonard,
Have your heard the album "Has Been" by William Shatner? It's actually quite enjoyable, especially the cut "Common People".
