Joan As Police Woman

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

In the '90s, the singer-songwriter and violinist Joan Wasser played in art-rock acts like the Dambuilders and Those Bastard Souls. Since then, she's collaborated with Antony and the Johnsons, Lou Reed and a long list of others. A few years ago, she reinvented herself in the solo act Joan as Police Woman and earned raves for a debut LP of soulful punk, or perhaps punk soul. Before next week's release of her second album, "To Survive," Wasser joins us for a live performance in our studio.

Not only do I remember Policewoman, I remember Joan as a blonde (with dreads I think?) playing violin (and bass?)for the Dambuilders! Great band, great musician. Love your stuff Joan!

Joan As Police Woman is AMAZING - she is so talented at crafting these really simple yet profound piano melodies. But people should note that her drummer is Ben Perowsky, a super-talented musician also known in jazz circles - especially for his work with Uri Caine, as a frequent sideman on John Zorn's Tzadik label and with trumpeter Steven Bernstein's Millenial Territory Orchestra. It's really cool to see when rock musicians use jazz musicians in their bands! Another good example is folk rocker Ani DiFranco using Todd Sickafoose, Mike Dillon and Allison Miller as her backing band.
