Music to the Extreme

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Ever seen a marching band of 100 tubas? Or an orchestra made up of 200 electric guitarists and bassists? Frank J. Oteri, editor of web magazine NewMusicBox, and Frank Scheffer, director of the new DVD "Helicopter String Quartet," join us to talk about some of the most bizarre music performances ever attempted.

Guests:

A comment and a question: I love your show, and was particularly delighted to hear this one. I've long been fascinated by Stockhausen but hadn't heard about the helicopter piece. I remember well his getting singers to achieve overtones in methods that evoked Tibetan chanting.

Could you possibly send me the spelling of the Swedish composer your guest mentioned who wrote a piece for 100 Harley Davidsons? His first name was Stefan, but I didn't catch the pronunciation of his last name ("Musinmark"?). I tried Googling elements of the info, but could find no reference to the work.

Thanks!
