It's difficult to catagorize this music and I admit I am totally biased, but I'm in love with the skill and innovation of young Alexander Turnquist. His first album "Faint at the Loudest Sound" is nothing short of pure beauty and always makes me smile. Go to www.myspace.com/alexanderturnquist for a listen. My two favorites tunes can be listened to. Thanks
These are great choices all around!
If you want to learn more about the Smithsonian Folkways album ¡Ayombe! The Heart of Colombia's Música Vallenata, check out the Smithsonian Magazine feature about the Vallenato accordion competition and school:

Look out for a documentary film about Vallenato and the making of the album in 2009!

A few world music albums that I really liked this year were:
Miles From India, the project that is Miles Davis music played by top jazz players and Indian Classical artists.
Mayra Andrade: Navega: Fantastically fun Cape Verdean music with a Brazilian flair.
Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project: Little heard indigenous musics from The Caribbean coast of South America.
