Alash

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Tuva is a tiny Republic that sits at the southern edge of Siberia and, through history, has been part of Mongolia, China and now the Russian Federation. The Tuvan people are famous for their unique throat singing, but these days they are mixing it with foreign elements. The ensemble Alash joins us for a live performance of traditional Tuvan music, mixed with Western sounds.

Alash will perform twice tonight at Barbès in Brooklyn, once at 8 and once at 10.

Thank you for hosting Alash in your studio. I hope listeners will be curious enough to search out more information about this part of the world. Tuva is a beautiful country whose music, at first observation, may be curious, is perhaps exotic, and is hopefully intriguing. When experienced in situ, it has a power, passion, honesty, and depth that is startling, disarming and captivating. Put on some Alash, some Chirgilchin, some Huun Huur Tu, some Yat Kha. Start somewhere. It heals.

I saw Alash perform last year at Barbes in Brooklyn. The small, cozy bar setting became quite claustrophobic due to the amount of people who showed up to watch the performers, but it was totally worth it. I was actually there for my 'musics of the world' class, and glad I had a chance to experience Tuvan throat singing.

I've known about Alash for over a year now, but I finally got to see them last weekend play with the Flecktones. It was mind-blowing, really, and the acoustics in the hall were great, which of course made it that much better. Thanks for featuring them!
