Performing in Second Life

Move over MySpace. Pop acts like Suzanne Vega and Duran Duran have staged "concerts" in the online virtual world known as Second Life - in which they are represented by animated figures, known as avatars. Now orchestras like the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic are trying it out as well. New York Times music critic Anne Midgette; singer-songwriter (and one-time avatar) Jonathan Coulton; and Jesse Reiner from Second Life creators Linden Lab join us.

for folks out there who may be thinking this sounds completely bonkers... Second Life is nothing more (or less) than the 3D Web. If you surf the Web at all now, you'll be surfing (or more likely flying) Second Life soon.

One more thing, after performing over 100 concerts in secondlife, I think it would have been a nice to have a few seasoned SL performers. Possibly another day? I am generally NOT harassed as was said by the performer who only played two concerts there, and the people are amazing. And they sometimes comment (and very personally) about each song that I perform. I have had people (both men and women) say, "that song brought tears to my eyes" and "your music was the perfect way to end my very hectic day" and things like that. So, a lot of information (on the positive side) of performing in secondlife, was not mentioned.

I have been performing in secondlife for almost year.I have a manager in secondlife as well as a fan club with over 600 people. I am one of the highest paid performers in SL and I have my own island that I share with a musician from Toronto (who is now one of my best friends). He built a 3 sim venue that can support 150 people and I have performed live video concerts there. I have my new CD in pre-release in secondlife, and the people who have purchased it are working with me in a private forum to help me with song order and track selection. I am also having a contest for best cover art for the SL release of the CD with the winner receiving L$10,000.
I perform in SL under the name Louis Volare.
I also have two other personalties that share the same avatar: Luigi Volare - jazz piano and vocals and Landon Volare - sing/songwriter guy Louis Volare is the solo piano guy who does new agey, contemporary classicla like the CD "unwind"
Secondlife continues to be an amazing experience and it is very helpful for a niche recording artist such as myself.

I am denizen of Second Life. While I don't regular attend concerts in Second Life, I do participate in technical presentations frequently. As far as the fidelity is concerned, it all depends upon how you stream it.
The only reason you hear about sex and shopping so frequently is because, that is what the press--excluding WNYC--is interested in.
