Beam Me Up, Mr. Parker

« previous episode | next episode »

Wednesday, June 30, 2004

Classical pianist Jon Kimura Parker is known for bringing a touch of irreverence to the concert hall, incorporating the theme from The X-Files into the cadenza of a Mozart concerto and occasionally performing in a Star Trek uniform. Yet he’s also known for bringing power and poetry to the keyboard literature, and today on Soundcheck, the pianist joins host John Schaefer in advance of his New York Philharmonic debut. Also on the show, theater critic Clive Barnes discusses a major tribute taking place at the Lincoln Center Festival, marking the centenary of the birth of English choreographer Frederick Ashton. The series will feature four of the world's leading ballet companies, including England's Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and Japan's K-Ballet Company.
