Monday, November 03, 2003

Vocal music for all ages takes center stage on today’s Soundcheck. Host John Schaefer visits with early-music conductor Paul Hillier, who earned raves earlier this fall when he led the vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices at Zankel Hall, and is back in town with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. The Estonian ensemble is best known for its gorgeous series of recordings exploring the choral tradition of the Baltic Sea countries, Scandinavia, and Russia. We also check in with Dan Zanes, the former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, who is giving children’s music a hip makeover, with a new CD featuring such unlikely guest artists as composer Philip Glass (playing pump organ), punk rock icon Deborah Harry, and the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir. Selections from the disc will featured in an upcoming performance at Symphony Space.
