The early music ensemble ARTEK is taking madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi and creating a story with a twist. They’ll talk about how Renaissance music and modern staging can go well together, and they’ll sing a few songs for us live. Also, composers Julia Wolfe, Cynthia Hopkins and director Bob McGrath join us to talk about the delicate task of making music for the production Jennie Richee (or Eating Jalooka Fruit Before It’s Ripe) based on the narratives in the paintings of Henry Darger.
Considered “outsider art,” the paintings of Henry Darger have been a source of inspiration and great controversy since they were discovered after his death in 1973. His life was just as puzzling and intriguing as his art.
