Violinist Julia Fischer has won award upon award, toured the world and has a debut with the New York Philharmonic this week. Oh, and she’s only 19 years old. Conductor Skitch Henderson drops by to talk about how The New York Pops is recreating Nathaniel Shilkret’s Concerto For Trombone,originally written for The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and not heard live in the 60 years since it first premiered. We also hear the sounds of One Drum, an eclectic multi-cultural ensemble which performs songs, stories, and dances rooted in the cultures of Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
WNYC recorded the original concert that featured The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra playing Nathaniel Shilkrit’s Concerto for Trombone. We hear some excerpts from that rare recording.
