The Glory of Gospel

« previous episode | next episode »

Friday, December 26, 2003

A pioneering force behind the evolution of the modern gospel quartet sound, the Dixie Hummingbirds are among the longest-lived and most successful groups of the past century. Although they have had well over a dozen personnel changes since their founding in the late 1920s, they haven't lost touch with their roots, absorbing most of the changes church music underwent over the last few decades. They join us today for a conversation and a preview of their latest CD. Also on the program is the Reverend Edward A. Babb, who directs the Harlem-based McCollough Sons of Thunder, a trombone shout band representing gospel’s Sacred Brass tradition. We end the program with a joyful roar.
