Thursday, October 10, 2002

The Chieftains, Ireland’s best-known folk band, just released Down the Old Plank Road: The Nashville Sessions, a disc tracing country and bluegrass music to their Irish roots. Paddy Moloney, the group’s founder, leader, and uileann pipe player, stops by to discuss the album, a recording 10 years in the making with the help of such country and bluegrass stars as Alison Krauss and Lyle Lovett. Plus, violinist and San Francisco Symphony concertmaster Alexander Barantschik will be in the studio for a live performance and conversation about the orchestra’s concerts at Carnegie Hall this week.
The Chieftains’ latest CD is the band’s 40th career album and the follow-up to the double Grammy-winning 1992 release, Another Country.
