This week, Soundcheck examines the particular problems faced by young artists who have chosen a career in music composition. Since graduating over a decade ago with a degree in French literature, award-winning composer Lisa Bielawa has had a busy New York career, serving as co-producer of Music at the Anthology, which commissions and premieres works by young composers. She’ll be in to discuss the joys and hardships of her industry, as well as how she prefers to help other young composers: by serving as an advocate. Plus, the talented young members of the Avalon String Quartet will be in the studio to perform a quirky pair of works by Dvorak and Wynton Marsalis.
Combining her music-performance and literary backgrounds, Lisa Bielawa has written music based around such poetry and prose as Eugene Onegin, by 19th century Russian poet Aleksandr Pushkin, and Shakespeare’s Richard III.

Last season, the Avalon String Quartet was in residence at Juiliard serving as teaching assistants to the Juilliard Quartet. The Avalon Quartett has also been in residence at the Hartt School of Music and with the Vermeer Quartet at Northern Illinois University.
