The bonds of women’s friendships, strong and weak.
This is an all-female edition of SELECTED SHORTS, two wonderful stories by and about women and their friendships and ambitions. Tony Award-winning actress and singer Joanna Gleason reads “Amazon”, by Sylvia Brownrigg, from her collection TEN WOMEN WHO SHOOK THE WORLD. The title is a play on words, and the story reveals little-known facts about the world’s seven wonders, as well as about what constitutes friendship between women of accomplishment.
Amy Hempel’s “In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson Is Buried” was chosen by David Sedaris for an evening he hosted at Symphony Space, and his introduction to this funny, delicate and wrenching story precedes an equally delicate reading by Mary Beth Hurt.
